Sustainable area development
Area development means adding value to an existing area. It means giving it a new boost, creating a new and sustainable future, and finding a perfect balance between the various functions such as residential, work, business and relaxation.
As far as we are concerned, area development is not just about building. We look beyond that. It can have a major impact on sustainability, on the economy of a town or area and on current and future employment. Area development offers lots of opportunities. These go hand in hand with a huge responsibility to contribute to the objectives at national and European level to make the building industry sustainable and to construct in a modular and circular fashion. We take this responsibility extremely seriously and have plenty of experience in our portfolio with large-scale area development. Examples include the completed projects of Spaarnebuiten, Oud Seyst and Westerdoks VOR Cour, as well the Kabeldistrict, Dutch Lake Residence and Shipdock Amsterdam-Noord projects which are ongoing.
Kabeldistrict
The Kabeldistrict, or ‘Cable District’, is a large-scale area development which is intended to create 3,000 homes and 2,000 jobs. A high-tech, mixed urban area where living, working, learning and making come together. Businesses that have developed beyond the start-up phase are to be given all the space they need to continue growing. Plenty of attention is to be paid to sustainability both during and after the development, with many materials being reused and the area being traffic calmed in the future.
Spaarnebuiten
The focus of the SpaarneBuiten development was largely on sustainability. For example, the soil was decontaminated, sustainable materials were widely used and a great deal of energy was channelled into the quality of the drinking water. These efforts were intended to make sure that SpaarneBuiten is not only future-proof, but also a healthy place to live for its residents. SpaarneBuiten is an ambitious project that was carried out in phases.
Dutch Lake Residence
Another excellent example of area development is Dutch Lake Residence. It has involved a thorough metamorphosis of a unique 22-hectare recreation area and the construction of 222 holiday homes. In the area, we are creating a new future in which recreation and nature go hand in hand. The main focus of this development is on existing natural structures. Indeed, the area’s diversity is being increased by introducing trees and plants to give nature plenty of space to grow.
